Heroes 1.09 - Mass Media, Pt. 2 Summary
Nivel wakes up to a radio show cheerily announcing the latest Scooby gossip. He shuts it off, calls Brad, and tells him to execute "the plan."
Gunn, dejected by his disasterous press conference in Mass Media Part One, finds Angel running a business seminar in the back room of Champion Investigations. Gunn tries to get the vampire to help him solve the fame mystery, but Angel brushes him off and then insults him. Gunn leaves, pissed off.
Willow walks down the halls of the Spirit of the Mother Healing Center with Sage, a slightly older woman who has been her guide to getting better. The redhead talks about how cool it is to be walking without the serious ick and Sage praises her talents and progress. Willow gets Sage to tell her a little about herself, but the spiritualist changes the subject quickly. Willow expresses disappointment that she hasn't been able to reach Kennedy. Sage tells her to get some rest.
Gunn tracks down Dawn, Buffy, and Spike in an effort to figure out what's causing the superstarness, but they're all too caught up in their own celebrity to really be of any help.
Willow flips through the television and sees nothing but all Scoobies, all the time. Gunn comes in, and finally gets the help he needs. Willow's starting to find this whole thing creepy and wants to figure it out. They get to work.
The next day, Xander watches screaming fans from the back of a limo. He tries to question Laurel about this "fix-it" show he's there to do, but she's chattering on her cellphone. Xander is incredibly nervous about his national television debut - a live debut.
In the makeup chair, a flighty stylist gives Xander an all-new look that takes years off his face. He hates it. Laurel reveals that he's actually running a relationships program, much in the manner of Dr. Phil. Before he can object too much, Xander's shoved out into the studio to wait for the show to start.
Gunn and Willow discuss that the cursed item causing this caper might be the DVD of Andrew's movie from "Storyteller". This poses a logistics problem, and there's something not quite right about the situation. They both realize that it's not the DVD. It's the Buffy-summers.net website. They work on finding an address for the server.
Xander's show begins and he lamely sputters an opening monologue. The crowd eats it up, though, and he's a little more comfortable. That is until he announces his first guest - Buffy Summers. He gets much more nervous and babbly, until Laurel says (in his earpiece) that they're cutting to commercial - but first he has to announce two mystery guests.
Willow watches commercials while waiting for "Xander!" to come back on. She wishes Gunn hadn't gone off to the address they found on his own, but she couldn't stop him. The program pops back on, and Willow sees Xander's surprise guests before he does. It's Angel and Spike.
Illyria tries to find Spike to keep the appointment he made with her while making the promo reel in the previous episode. She does not find him at his apartment, but she does get his voicemail and finds out he's at this "Fox studio."
In New York, a bartender is trying to get the television to work. His boss tells him to leave it be, but the bartender fixes the set so he can watch "Xander!" Everybody hears them announce Spike and Angel as the mystery guests. The boss nurses his Sea Breeze and tells the bartender to shut the set off.
Spike and Angel walk onto the set of "Xander!" and things get very uncomfortable very quickly. After a wacky mishap with the seating arrangement, the two vampires, the slayer, and the newly minted talk show host start a four-way verbal brawl, airing out old concerns and new hurts on national television. They dive into Spike's lack of communication with Buffy, re: aliveness, Cordelia's death, Angel's need to control every little situation, and more. As Buffy learns about Spike's dalliance with Harmony, the show cuts to commercial.
Gunn arrives at the address he discovered for the Buffy-summers.net server. He wheels in and finds the place has two floors - and only a staircase for to the second one. He goes about opening the downstairs apartments.
Illyria arrives at television studio, but isn't allowed inside. Being a GodKing, she makes her own entrance. The screaming fans pour into the building.
As "Xander!" comes back on, we find that the quartet's bickering has taken a turn for the weird. Spike removes his shirt. Suddenly, they're surrounded by screaming fans.
Gunn opens up the apartment doors downstairs and finds nothing. He's about to call in somebody else to handle the upstairs when Willow gives him a ring. He's the only one who can do this right now. He wheels up to the mammoth staircase, assesses his opponent, and then starts to release himself from his wheelchair.
The fan onslaught continues. Angel's shirt is ripped to shreds. Xander's eyepatch is stolen. The four of them plus Illyria escape, but are dogged by new legions of the admiring at every turn.
Gunn begins his harrowing ascent up the stairs. After a few minor glitches in the process, he gets a rhythm down. He almost makes it to the top, but is foiled by a jutting nail in the banister. His balance lost, he starts toppling backwards.
The Heroes on the run make a break for the parking garage only to find that's also filled with screaming groupies. They hole up in an office, but the door won't hold forever...
Gunn's survival instinct kicks in full blast and he uses his cast to catch himself on the railing and stop his descent. Battered but not beaten, he gets up and starts to ascend again.
Trapped in a small room with some truly messed-up fans trying to beat down the door, the Heroes try to figure out a plan of action. Spike notices that Illyria isn't garnering any worship whatsoever. A window breaks behind them, and Angel starts breaking out weapons.
Gunn finds the servers and with the magic power of his swiftly kicking foot, unplugs the whole kaboodle.
The fans are almost through the door. Xander, Spike, and Angel all agree that violence is necessary. Just as things get really rotten... it stops. The once-crazed admirers don't even remember why they were doing what they were doing, and they surely don't know who the people they were doing it for are. Willow (on the phone with Buffy) says the spell must have ended.
Gunn calls Willow and finds out he's succeeded. She offers to find him a ride back home, but he says not to hurry on it. He looks down the stairs and says that he's got another task to do.
Sage walks into Willow's room. Willow apologizes for being there and says she understands if Sage doesn't remember her. Sage does, however. She knew who Willow was even before the fame spell. She gives Willow her home number, to which Willow notes she has a girlfriend. Sage says she has a boyfriend. Willow says they can definitely hang out.
Buffy and the gang confront Laurel, who immediately confesses to betraying them. She makes her escape, though, leaving behind a necklace much like the one Julia had in "Dawn of a New Era" and a coded note.
Nivel walks through the Renraw complex and notes the fear that the Brotherhood has for him since he killed Walt. He goes to revel over the cult's latest possession - the 47 Fingers, a device capable of opening very powerful boxes, like the one that was retrieved from the museum around the time Buffy was turned to stone. Nivel receives a call, and thanks the man at the other end for the fame spell. It's apparent these two know each other well, and they both express their hopes for The Reborn One.
Back at Champion Investigations, Angel tries to decode the note but fails miserably. Willow walks in and handles it perfectly, though. It mentions one very interesting thing - the Brotherhood of Renraw. Angel wants to get on it, but Buffy thinks there's something weird about this situation... familiar.
Ethan Rayne finishes his conversation with Nivel and turns to Laurel. They discuss the frame-up of the Brotherhood and he tells her to get out of town. He muses on his plan for the greatest chaos the world has ever seen. This is a much changed Ethan, and Laurel sees only darkness in his eyes.
